ECOTOURISM

watching and respect

For us, helping you enjoy your free time is a serious matter. Our activities are designed to be a unique and unforgettable experience. We provide private tours in small groups to give you an intimate viewing of nature. We want to make sure that you know the territory in a real and meaningful way. With us, you won’t be just a simple tourist!

More Than Birds organizes nature field activities to watch wildlife and to enjoy amazing landscapes. Our guides are local biologists with an excellent knowledge of the territory where they work: the Cantabrian Range. Our main focus is in the following species: Brown Bear (Ursus arctos), Wild Cat (Felis silvestris), Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix hispaniensis), Cantabrian Chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva), Broom Hare (Lepus castroviejoi) and Ibex (Capra pyrenaica).

Birds are our passion; thus we design prívate tours à la carte for the most emblematic birds of the Cantabrian mountain range: Wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria), Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), Snow Finch (Montifringilla nivalis), Alpine Accentor (Prunella collaris), Marsh Tit (Poecile palustris), Dipper  (Cinclus cinclus), and many more.

More Than Birds is comitted to nature conservation and scientific knowledge. That is why our activities are respectful to nature and are designed to avoid disturbing the natural behavior of the observed species. We also collaborate with scientists to make sure that our wildlife observations and data can be used to improve both the knowledge and  conservation of these species:

Iberian natural diversity is unique in Europe, of which the Cantabrian mountain range is a shining example. The Iberian northwest is home to the wildest and best-preserved lands of south-western Europe. Picos de Europa, Somiedo, Mampodre, Los Argüellos, Laciana and Alto Sil, Omaña, are some of the strongholds where wildlife has been preserved alongside human settlements.

Wildlife watching

We are specialists in wildlife observation. All our guides are extensively-trained biologists and environmentalists. In addition, we comply with the ethical code that we consider essential when dealing with this type of activity. There is a great wildlife viewing experience waiting for you any time of the year: brown bear, wildcat, partridge, alpine birds …

Hides

A different way to enjoy wildlife in its own habitat is through the use of ‘hides’ or shelters designed to see without being seen. These hides are integrated into the environment to comfortably wait to see some of our wild neighbors.

This style of observation stealthiness and a lot of patience, since the presence of these species is not forced in any way. We strategically locate these blinds based on the terrain, our knowledge of the species and the time of day, in order to give us the best possible chance of a sighting.

The presence of the “target” species is not guaranteed, but should it appear, the opportunity not only to see but to photograph it from a privileged spot will be worth the time spent.
